H. Miscellaneous Works – both Ecclesiastical & Secular

Two particular entries merit mention, namely, the extensive work at Scarisbrick Hall, Lancs. [H18] – including the E. wing and a complete rebuild of AWN Pugin's clock tower into a tower‚cum-spire that dominates the surrounding landscape for miles around – and the conversion of the ruined Mediaeval Synodal Hall of the former Archiepiscopal Palace at Mayfield into a convent chapel [H25].

1 1852: Alton, Staffs. –Furnishing & decoration of the chapel at The Towers: for the funeral of 16th Earl of Shrewsbury; in collaboration with JH Powell.
2 1852–56: Alton, Staffs. – Minor works on the Hospital of St John the Baptist: completion of AWN Pugin's buildings.
3 1853: Ramsgate, Kent – Designs AWN Pugin's tomb & floor in the Pugin Chantry in St. Augustine's Church.
4 1853: Ware, Herts. – Modifies the Choir Stalls in AWN Pugin's St Edmund's College Chapel.
5 1853–69: Alton, Staffs – Ongoing additions/alterations at The Towers: includes the Great Dining Room, the New Rooms (together with their fittings), the Staircase, and fittings in the Chapel.
6 1854: Killarney, Ireland – High Altar, reredos & tabernacle in AWN Pugin's Killarney Cathedral: destroyed 1972–73.
7 1854: Wrexham, Clwyd, N. Wales – Additions/alterations at Chirk Castle: includes Chapel E. window (now replaced), new housing for the bell at the top of the Clock-tower on the W. wall of the court, two conically-roofed turrets connected by a crenellated wall to the S. side of the castle, & re-facing of the stables.
8 1854–56: Ushaw, Co Durham – Laundry, laboratories and offices at St Cuthbert's College: in the NE. corner of the site.
9 1855: Liverpool, Merseyside – Lays out Ford Cemetery (see also A29): Lodge demolished in 1961 on account of road widening.
10 1855–56: Ushaw, Co. Durham – Decorates & furnishes the Professors' Parlour in St Cuthbert's College: including X-frame chairs.
11 1856: Aston-by-Stone, Staffs. ‚ Renovation of the Church of Holy Michael, Archangel: see also C4 & D1.
12 1856–58: Ushaw, Co. Durham – Infirmary & Museum at St. Cuthbert's College.
13 1857: Albury, Surrey – Work at Albury Park (for H Drummond): originally an AWN Pugin commission.
14 1859: Oscott, W. Midlands – Academic/Exhibition (Northcote) Hall at St Mary's College: begun in 1860 on the site of the former N. cloister; drawing exhibited at The Royal Academy in May 1861. Building was not completed (by PP Pugin, to his own design) until 1881. Northcote was Rector of the college, 1860–77.
15 1860–61: Ramsgate, Kent – First stage of additions & alterations at The Grange.
16 1860s: Burnley, Lancs. – High Altar (& reredos?) in St Mary's RC church: now removed.
17 1861: Ware, Herts. – The Altar of the Holy Family in the Lady Chapel of St. Edmund's College Chapel.
18 1861–c.65: Scarisbrick, Lancs – Work at Scarisbrick Hall (for Lady Scarisbrick): includes E. wing (incorporating a chapel, the Blue Drawing Room, Lady Scarisbrick's Bedroom, E. staircase), a dominating rebuild (now devoid of its original ornamental cresting) of AWN Pugin's Clock-tower, twin-turreted entrance to the stable-court, conservatories and vineries.
19 1862: Ripon, N. Yorks. – High Altar & reredos in St Wilfrid's (RC) Church: carved by W Farmer; see also Aii.
20 1862: Ramsgate, Kent – Installs screen & floor in the Lady Chapel of St Augustine's Church.
21 1863: Ramsgate, Kent – Adds an oriel window to St Edward's (the presbytery next to St Augustine's Church).
22 1863: Greenwich, London – Marble tomb-chest for Canon R North (1800–1860) in Our Ladye, Star of the Sea: sculpted by W Farmer. North was the Founder of the church (by W Wardell, 1851).
23 c.1863: Charnwood Forest, Leics. – Monument for EA March Phillipps VC, in the Lay Cemetery at Mount St Bernard's Abbey: now demolished.
24 1864: Shepshed, Leics. – Internal alterations at Garendon Park (for Ambrose March Phillipps de Lisle): included a two-storey hall & a chapel in the roof space; house demolished in 1964.
25 1864–65: Mayfield, Sussex – Conversion of the (ruined) Mediaeval Synodal Hall of the former Archiepiscopal Palace into a chapel for the Convent of the Holy Child Jesus: now St Leonards-Mayfield School for Girls. High Altar (1880), reredos (1881) & flanking niched statues of Our Lady & St Joseph (1882) by PP Pugin all removed c.1950/1, and the screen somewhat earlier. Restoration of other parts of the Palace for use as conventual buildings dates from 1872, and are by G. Goldie.
26 1865–67: Kensal Green, London – Tomb of Cardinal Wiseman in Kensal Green Catholic Cemetery: removed to Westminster Cathedral in 1907.
27 1866: Margate, Kent – Alterations & repairs at Ss Austin & Gregory's Church (of 1826).
28 1866: Childwall, Liverpool, Merseyside – Extension/alterations to AWN Pugin's Oswaldcroft House (for Henry Sharples) of 1844–47: now St Joseph's Home.
29 1867: Belmont, Herefords. – Extensive re-modelling at Belmont House (for F Wegg-Prosser, MP): includes the provision of a chapel.
30 1867 (with GC Ashlin): Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, Ireland – Altar to St Joseph in St Mary's Church.
31 1867 (with GC Ashlin): Fore, Co. Westmeath, Ireland – Restoration work at the Greville/Nugent Mausoleum: used by the Nugent family since 1680, and incorporates the tower (c.1500) of the former church of St Feichin.
32 1868 (with GC Ashlin): Dublin, Ireland – Lays out part of Mountjoy Estate.
33 1869 (with GC Ashlin): Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, Ireland – Remodelling of Enniscorthy Castle (for Isaac Newton Wallop, 1825–91, 5th Earl of Portsmouth): one of their few domestic projects.
34 1870: Woolwich, London – Presbytery extension at St Peter's Church.
35 c.1870–72: Ramsgate, Kent – Second stage of additions & alterations at The Grange.
36 1873: Shepshed, Leics. – Conversion of a garden temple into a chapel at Garendon Park (for Ambrose March Phillipps de Lisle).
37 nd: Liverpool, Merseyside – Miscellaneous work at AWN Pugin's (1841–43) Mount Vernon Convent (Sisters of Mercy): now demolished.
38 nd: Liverpool, Merseyside – Fittings in the Side Chapel in the 1885 rebuild of AWN Pugin's church of St Mary: : comprises altar, reredos and tomb-chest of a former Rector of the original church between 1850–60 (Dom Joseph Sheridan, OSB. The church was totally destroyed by bombing in WWII; it was reopened in 1953 to a design of AG Bullen, but is now demolished.
39 nd: Waterford, Ireland – Completion of Convent & Provision of Fittings within (Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary): ): convent started by AWN Pugin.

Uncorroborated works

i 1854: Macclesfield, Ches. – Pulpit in AWN Pugin's St Alban's, [Ref. (xvi)].
ii 1854/1856–68: Bakewell, Derbys. – Burton Closes (for J. Allcard): additions to existing house. Partly demolished in 1888 and 1949; now a residential home.
iii 1858: Longworth (Nr.Bartestree), Herefords. – Restoration of the pre-reformation (Phillips Estate) chapel for Catholic worship: includes the provision of altar & presbytery.
iv 1864: Woolton, Liverpool, Merseyside – Reredoses in St Mary's RC Church.
v 1869: Bartestree, Herefords. – Re-assembly of Longworth Chapel [H(iii)] & presbytery [D(i)]: the chapel was adjoined to Bucknall's St Anne's Convent Chapel (see B9) on the site of the Convent of Our Lady of Charity and Refuge [B9] for use as the Parish Church.
vi nd: Ramsgate, Kent – Mural designs in St Mary's (High Anglican) Church, Chapel Place: now demolished.
vii nd: Oscott, W. Midlands – Fireplace over-mantle in the Professors' Dining Room at St Mary's College.
