K. Unexecuted Designs
Many of EW Pugin's designs remain unrealised, the most ambitious of which are those for three English cathedrals – Shrewsbury [K1] Liverpool [K2] and Birkenhead [K4], and one (with GC Ashlin) in Ireland at Nenagh [K10]. Shrewsbury Cathedral as actually built [A8] is a very reduced version of the original, lacking the projected dominating tower & spire and high clerestory; as noted by M Fisher, the slender proportions and other features of this unexecuted tower-cum-spire closely resemble that designed by B Whelan (a pupil of EW Pugin) as part of his 1871–72 extensions to St Marie's, Rugby [A41].
Of the projected Liverpool cathedral, only the chancel & side-chapels were ever built, which became the church of Our Lady Immaculate
[A5].
The idea of a cathedral in Birkenhead arose from the bishop's dissatisfaction with the scaled-down cathedral in Shrewsbury, and his desire for a grander, more cathedralesque building that would also serve as a parish church in Birkenhead – the most populous town in the Diocese of Shrewsbury. Bertram, the 17th Earl of Shrewsbury (1832–1856) offered to meet the cost provided Pugin exercised more restraint than was displayed in his initial design that would have cost more than twice the amount the Earl was prepared to make available. Accordingly, an appeal was made to Rome to change the title of the See from Shrewsbury to Birkenhead, but this was refused. The site of the proposed cathedral was later used for EW Pugin's church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception [A28], which was commenced in 1860.
