TRUE PRINCIPLES This is the title of the Pugin Society Newsletter/Journal. It is named after one of Augustus Pugin's greatest works - The True Principles of Pointed or Christian Architecture (1841) - in which he outlines his architectural theories, showing firmly that it is in the Gothic style that these theories can best be exemplified. From 2003, True Principles appears once a year, in the summer. It is a well presented and attractively illustrated journal, filled with interesting articles and features on many Pugin-related subjects, by a whole range of writers. To complement it, a four-page news sheet, Present State (named after Pugin's The Present State of Ecclesiastical Architecture in England of 1843), appears in the spring, with our important Events List, a round-up of recent news, update on buildings at risk, letters, etc. A new Pugin biography is due to be published in autumn 2007. It will be reviewed in True Principles. Therefore, exceptionally, the 2007 issue will be published in December. We are anxious to encourage debate on Pugin topics, in either Present State or True Principles. Present State is edited by Catriona Blaker, catblake@freeuk.com. The editor of True Principles from 2004 is Dr Timothy Brittain-Catlin, T.J.Brittain-Catlin@kent.ac.uk. |
